Alabama White Sauce (White BBQ Sauce)

Alabama white sauce is a tangy, mayo-based, white bbq sauce. Skip the tomato-based bbq sauces and make this recipe- the flavor is incredible!
What is Alabama White Sauce?
Need a change from your regular barbecue sauce? Ever hear of white BBQ sauce? This condiment is amazing and a fantastic change from typical vinegar/tomato puree or ketchup-based barbecue sauces.
This mayonnaise based white sauce requires no cooking, is whipped up in minutes, and has incredible flavor!
Recipe Video
This bbq sauce recipe is pretty simple to make. Nonetheless, to see the process from start to finish, watch the video located in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Ingredients in white bbq sauce
- mayonnaise – Any variety of plain flavored mayo can be used, but I don’t recommend using non-fat mayo.
- creamy horseradish sauce – This is NOT the same as prepared horseradish. Actually prepared horseradish is one of the ingredients in creamy horseradish sauce.
- apple cider vinegar– the hint of apple cider gives a nice boost to the tangy flavor of the Alabama white sauce. Regular white vinegar will work in a pinch.
- yellow mustard
- sugar – Feel free to substitute with a granulated sugar substitute
- salt and black pepper
- cayenne
This is tangy, lip smacking and fun change that can be used on your next batch of smoked or grilled chicken. It’s key to make my Alabama Style Chicken Sandwiches and used it the other night on my BBQ Spatchcock Chicken. So, so good!
I like to reserve some white barbecue sauce to use as a dipping sauce for shredded chicken and in sandwiches, too.
For another homemade barbecue sauce, give my Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce a try on your next rack of ribs. Enjoy!

Notes
- Prepared horseradish is made with grated horseradish root, vinegar, and salt. Prepared horseradish is not the same as horseradish sauce but is an ingredient in it. Creamy horseradish sauce combines prepared horseradish with cream, sour cream, or mayonnaise, which makes it milder and creamier (The Spruce Eats). If using prepared horseradish, I would start with a 1/4 cup and taste test to suit your tastes for heat level.

Do you think it will work well on St. Louis ribs? Also Id like to make a suggestion… Can you list the measurments in the beginning of your receipts? I made the dry rub mix for your Saint Louis ribs and didnt see any measurments so just guessed. It wasnt until I put ribs in the oven and was scrolling thru did I see the measurements. Hopefully I wasnt too heavy handed!
Thanks for trying the recipes Donna! Yes, I love that Alabama sauce and it’s great on so many things. I have a question though, how did you see the ingredients for the dry rub and not the amounts? If there is an issue with the recipe card I could investigate further. Thanks for you help!
Can Miracle Whip be used instead of Mayo?
That would be just fine! Let me know if you try it!
How would you recommend adjusting for just using prepared horseradish? Using a creamy horseradish sauce that already contains mayo seems unnecessarily.
Andy I’ve updated the recipe card to reflect the clarification in addressing your inquiry. Prepared horseradish is made with grated horseradish root, vinegar, and salt. Prepared horseradish is not the same as horseradish sauce but is an ingredient in it. Creamy Horseradish Sauce combines prepared horseradish with cream, sour cream, or mayonnaise, which makes it milder and creamier. If using prepared horseradish, I would start with a 1/4 cup and taste test to suit your tastes for heat level.
After I preserve Alabama white sauce do I need to refrigerate?
Yes, you need to refrigerate whatever you dont use 🙂 Thank you!
I’m new to your website! So glad I found it. I made this sauce tonight and used it with the beef brisket (also your recipe) WOWWY!! What a great meal!! Thank you!
I am so glad you came across my site! Thank you for sharing! I hope you enjoy all that you try!
Amazing sauce!!!….we served it with our Sinister Rolls (mac & cheese & pulled pork egg rolls.)
We did 2.5 mayo instead of 2.
The Metric conversion is way out, making the apple cider vinegar 3/4 as much as the mayonnaise…
Neerena, I use a recipe plugin that automatically calculates that info. I went in and double checked it, does it seem to be working correctly for you now?
Hi, Would it ruin the recipe if I switched yellow mustard to brown or dijon?
Thanks!
Nope, not at all Mary Beth. 🙂
We used brown mustard…. It’s perfect!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Great change to everyday BBQ sauce! Everybody love it!! One question..How long will last in the fridge after 1st use?
Thanks Chad! Actually mine hasn’t made it past the 2 week mark, so I don’t know more than that! 🙂
about a week
What a delicious sauce!
Awesome, so glad you enjoyed this Kevin. Sometimes you just need to switch it up a little!
I am trying this on chicken wings tomorrow
Great idea! Bacon wrapped tots, too Kevin.
