What’s better than a Sloppy Joe sandwich when you’re in the mood for a little childhood memory and comfort food all rolled into one? These Chipotle Sloppy Joe Flatbreads are my updated version and served flatbread style.

A Sloppy Joe, for those who have not tried one before, is basically a sandwich made of ground beef, yellow onions, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce all served piled up in a hamburger bun.
I like to add a little flavor to mine with a chipotle pepper. Now I like the heat, and usually use 2 chipotle peppers, but have made it toned down a bit for the kids using just one. It’s just enough and oh so good! You be the judge, but I really like the smokiness it adds and the subtle heat factor. Instead of traditional ketchup, I opted to use tomato sauce for less sugar.
Where these are traditionally served on a hamburger bun, meat oozing out on all sides bite after bite, I opted for a handheld flatbread.
Easy for any party appetizer, lunch or snacks, these are a fun twist on an American classic sandwich.
I really like to use Flatout Flatbread. Actually, all of my flatbread recipes can be used substituting my go to pizza dough with Flatout Flatbread. It gets baked first to ensure it stays crispy and the texture is great.
With Dave being a Type 2 diabetic I preferred to swap out my standard white flour pizza crust or flatbread with Flatout’s Artisan Thin Pizza Crust. It’s a great taste and with 50% less carbs of a regular slice, it’s a win win and only 120 calories each!
The other weekend Dave and I were trying to decide if we should have tacos, a good sub sandwich or maybe pizza for lunch. I recalled making these not long ago with sesame seed hamburger buns, but since we were eating in, went to a house favorite – Flatout Flatbread.
IÂ whipped these up in 30 minutes. The crunch of the crispy flatbread holds up well to the saucy sloppy joe meat mixture. With a little cheddar cheese melted on top (because everything is better with cheddar) these Chipotle Sloppy Joe Flatbreads are superb. The memory of mom making these for us was even better.
Just think of all the different ways you can use Flatout Flatbread! The toppings and flavors are endless. Enjoy!

I may not try sloppy Joe, we make similar thing, but I would like to try your recipe, sounds easy and fun! Can i sub flatbread with tortilla?
Thanks and definitely Farida, I would toast them a little to crisp them up first, like the flatbread.
I’ve only ever had one sloppy joe and that was at a place that used to be not all that far from home. Not in the States, mind you, but this town’s cuisine is becoming more and more Americanised. I saw them on many menu’s in our travels in the States, but I never ordered one. Something tells me I could easily do with a flatbread version!
A quick and easy American classic all in a hand held format – flatbread! So many I remember as a kid were too sweet, but loved getting all “sloppy” and messy biting into the overfilled hamburger bun. This hits the right balance and the chipotle adds a little kick.
Sloppy Joe! Slop Sloppy Joe! These flatbreads look amazing, Kevin. I love the chipotle addition. I have fond memories of eating lots of sloppy joes for dinner when I was a kid. Hey, they’re easy and they’re fun. But they’re even more fun in flatbread form. I love me some Flatout! 🙂
That chipotle just adds that certain “adult” touch and I’m sure kids would enjoy it as well. It’s definitely more about flavor than heat, but a kiss of kick sure hits the spot! Maybe not today, but one day these flatbreads will be lunch for Robbie. 😉
This is a fun way to eat a sloppy joe, and actually quite a bit less sloppy. Nice work.
Thanks Jeff. Definitely less sloppy, which means I ate more than I should have 😉
Hey Kevin- I just started receiving your emails and I’ve loved all your recipes so far and have made them several times. My family really loves them too. I try my best to cook healthy foods and was wondering if you could provide nutritional information for your recipes?
Hi Lisa and thanks for stopping by, supporting the site and your feedback. I have pondered that often and will definitely look into it. I know there has to be a plugin out there. Thanks for the motivation! 🙂
First of all, I love that you’ve kicked up the heat on this childhood comfort food. Somehow putting it on flatbread makes it look grown up, even refined! We’d have this with a simple green salad and call it dinner.
Thanks Marissa. It was the chipotle’s destiny and works really well in this. We actually had one flatbread each and a salad, too. The leftovers are great! Have a great weekend.
We could totally be twinsies today, lol! Great minds think alike and Sloppy Joes are perfect comfort food – especially when you give them a grown-up twist like this! Great use for flatbread too.
LOL, so true. Thanks Faith!
Hey Kevin! I make sloppy joes pretty regularly and I love the addition of chipotle! I like using flatbreads because I’m not a big fan of too much bread, I want more of the good stuff on top! Here in the South sloppy joes are called loose meat sandwiches 🙂 Have a good weekend!
Loose meat sandwiches eh? I like that! The chipotle just adds that little bit of smokiness and heat. Love it. Hello to you and Gary, have a great weekend Dorothy. 🙂
I’ve never tried Flatout Flatbread but this looks like a great recipe for my first time. I love the creative sloppy joe option here, Kevin! This will please the grown ups and kids and I’m placing it on next week’s menu. Thanks, friend!
Thanks Sally. They are just such a great product and versatile. I’ve seen them everywhere these days. The sloppy joes are a sweet, spicy good topping and perfect for this weekend.
Those Flatout Flatbreads are great! And so are these chipotle sloppy joes. I remember regularly eating sloppy joes as a kid, but, you know what, I don’t think I’ve made ’em for years. I mean YEARS! And I do really enjoy them!! I love that you used chipotle pepper in there ’cause hubby and I LOVE spice and chipotle is definitely a go-to for us. Perfect weekend eats!
Aren’t they just so versatile? Love them and the fold-its are perfect for appetizers, too. I’m thinking you might need to make these sloppy joes this weekend, for the hubs of course. 😉
