Avocado crema is a tangy, irresistibly delicious Mexican avocado sauce. Make this recipe for a creamy sauce, dip or topping for spicy foods!

When you want something creamy to cool down the spicy heat of any dish, crema is your answer. Instead of adding regular sour cream to a plate of green chile chicken enchiladas, give this a try.

Or, instead of topping a plate of spicy Mexican Stuffed Peppers with guacamole, add a dollop of avocado Mexican sour cream!

What is crema?

Although it is sometimes referred to as Mexican sour cream, crema is not the same thing as sour cream. But they do have some similarities.

For example, both are made from dairy products, and both crema and sour cream have a tangy, rich flavor.

The primary difference between the two condiments is their consistency and texture. Mexican crema is typically thinner than sour cream.

Making Avocado Crema

To make avocado crema (or you can call it avocado sour cream), you just need to add an avocado and a couple of spices to the basic crema.

If you’re short on time, or you simply don’t want to make it from scratch, you can find ready-to-use Mexican crema in the dairy aisle of most large grocery stores.

Whipping air into the mixture will give you a thick, creamy consistency that’s perfect for dipping. The simplest way to do this is with an immersion blender.

USES + SERVING SUGGESTIONS

There are plenty of ways to use this delicious, creamy Mexican condiment!

  • Topping/garnish– Drizzle it onto fish tacos, a bowl of chili colorado, a tostada carne, or even a taco salad.
  • Dip for chips, raw veggies, or fresh cantaloupe or honeydew melon
  • Spread for sandwiches
  • Plating sauce– Place some of the avocado cream sauce into a squeeze bottle. Then use it to garnish and decorate a plate before you add any food to it.

NOTE:
To prevent avocado crema from oxidizing (turning brown), place a sheet of plastic wrap directly again the surface of the crema. This also prevents a layer of skin from forming.

Other Flavor Variations

By adding a few ingredients to a cup of basic crema, you can create different crema flavors.

The ingredients for each variety are shown below. The instructions for making them are the same as the avocado crema instructions.

Habanero Crema

  • 1 cup Mexican Crema
  • 1 tbsp habanero chile, chopped (1 medium size, or smaller for less heat)
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

For Cilantro Lime Crema

  • 1 cup Mexican Crema
  • 1/4 cup cilantro leaves
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

Note:
This variety is a bit thicker than the others. Thin with milk if needed.

For Chipotle Crema

1 cup Mexican Crema
2 tbsp chipotle in adobo sauce, chopped (1 large chipotle)
1 tbsp lime juice
1/2 tsp kosher salt

Instructions
Same as Avocado Crema.
