Call these breadsticks or twists, my Bacon Puff Pastry Cheese Twists are sweet, savory, crunchy and another perfect handheld appetizer for any party.
Made with puff pastry, Major Grey’s chutney, or jam of choice, cheddar cheese all twisted with bacon and baked to crispy goodness! Who could resist when you serve these up?
Super easy to put together with no experience required to make. You and these will be the hit of the party.
While I use chutney is this, any favorite jam of yours will do as well, though I might stick with apricot or peach. I actually painted one puff pastry sheet with four different jams and chutney to see which tasted better in a taste test. The apricot and peach had better appeal to me than the strawberry or grape did.
Major Grey’s Chutney is a favorite of mine and I love it smeared on flatbread like this Tandoori Chicken Flatbread and on pizzas. It’s perfect as a dipping sauce for numerous chicken appetizers and here in my Cheddar Bacon Puff Pastry Twists. Major Grey’s Chutney dates back to the 19th century and is presumably created by a British Army officer. The standard ingredients are mango, raisins, vinegar, lime juice, onion, tamarind and spices.
Crunchy and buttery puff pastry slathered with flavorful mango spiced Major Grey’s chutney and bacon twisted all around seem like an irresistible appetizer to me.

Bacon Puff Pastry Cheese Twists
Ingredients
- 1 package frozen puff pastry dough thawed, 2 sheets
- 1 cup Major Grey’s Chutney or apricot preserves
- 1 egg beaten
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 lbs bacon about 24 slices
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375℉. Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with aluminum foil. Set baking racks in each pan and spray racks with cooking spray.
- Roll out one puff pastry sheet to 8x12 inches. Brush with egg and spread ½ cup of chutney or preserves over dough up to edges. Sprinkle evenly with 1 cup of shredded cheese pressing lightly into dough to adhere. Starting at the short end of dough, fold over to enclose cheese mixture and press down lightly to seal. Cut short-wise into 12 ½-inch strips. Repeat process with remaining puff pastry and ingredients.
- Lay out one slice of bacon and lay one strip of cheese dough, stretching carefully the length of bacon. Pinching both ends, twist in opposite directions several times to spiral bacon and dough. Place on baking rack. Repeat with all.
- Bake 30 minutes or until pastry is browned and bacon crisp. Let cool five minutes and carefully remove twists from racks. Serve warm.

How could this possible NOT taste good? Puff pastry, bacon and cheese? Plus, chutney? You have all kinds of sweet/savoury flavours going on and I love it! Perfect for those holiday get togethers or just a random Friday night 😉 Pinning! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!
I am completely in agreement here Dawn. These work for me anytime! 🙂
Kevin!! I love these twists!! and the cold beers beside them as well! I am seriously making these tomorrow for an early Christmas party!
Now that put a smile on my face, thanks so much Gaila! 🙂
Not only do these sound delectable, but the visual is second to none!
High praise! Thanks so much Jessie, it’s comments like these that make the extra effort worth it! 🙂
Wow, these look incredible, Kevin! I’m sitting here drinking my morning coffee, and now I want a bacon + puff pastry twist. 🙂 I guess it really is true that bacon makes everything better! Good tips on that chutney, too…sounds like a real winner to me! I’m hoping these make an appearance at the holiday party we’re going to tonight!
Thanks Dave! Can’t go wrong with this combo and the chutney adds just enough of that “what is that?” goodness. 🙂
They just look irresistible – bacon, puff pastry and cheese with a savory/sweet twist? Yes, please! Can I be cheeky and invite myself to come to one of your Christmas parties? 🙂
You’d be welcome in my home anytime Miriam. 🙂
Sweet and savoury, plus bacon! I agree, they do seem irresistible. Great twists on a cheese twist!
Thanks Matt, these really hit the spot with all the right flavors. #BaconLovers 🙂
Sinful Kevin! Major Grey’s Chutney is one of my favorites!! Need these on my holiday appetizer list for sure! My husband is going to love them!
Who could resist, right? You’ll need these after all that morning gift giving and unwrapping. 😉 #SinfullyDelicious
Anything with puff pastry makes my heart go pitter-patter, but holy smokes did you take it up a million notches with this, Kevin!!! Puff pastry, chutney, cheese AND BACON?! I can’t. I mean, I definitely CAN and I WILL… but you know what I mean. 😉 SOOOO GOOD! Pinned! Cheers!
These are just off the hook tasty. Playing with a chili paste one today. Although I really need to go running. 🙂 Thanks so much Chey!
Hey Kevin! I’ll just park myself next to these and that nice cold beer! I love Major Grey’s! I like to use it as a dipper for coconut shrimp. That looks like thick cut bacon…?
I used regular bacon from my market, but I love thick bacon and think it would be fine, too. Maybe a minute or two longer in the oven… Cheers Dorothy!
Hi there, do you add another puff pastry on top and then twist ?
ie pastry filling pastry ?
Thanks
Hi there Jo. No, starting at the short end of dough, fold over to enclose cheese mixture and press down lightly to seal. Cut short-wise into 12 half-inch strips. Repeat process with remaining puff pastry and ingredients.
Lay out one slice of bacon and lay one strip of cheese filled puff pastry dough, stretching carefully the length of bacon. Pinching both ends, twist in opposite directions several times to spiral bacon and dough. So it’s the bacon then the cheese filled puff pastry strip on top of that, then hold both ends together and turn to twist. Hope this helps! 🙂
Thanks so much Kevin
They turned out petfect used dijon jnstead
Now that sounds dee-lish! Thanks Jo and have a wonderful Christmas holiday.
Hi Kevin,
Could these be made a day ahead and cooked before the party?
They kind of loose that crunch factor. You could make then a day ahead and keep covered in the refrigerator, just bake prior to the party. Let me know what you think Amy.
