Gramma’s Easy Apple Crisp

For me, this has to be the easiest apple crisp recipe and it’s all thanks to my Gramma. Made using peeled and chopped Granny Smith apples, this has a crunchy, buttery cinnamon topping all made from using basic pantry items.
Apple Crisp brings back fond memories of summertime at my maternal Grandmother’s house down in San Luis Obispo. After an awesome day of fun at either Pismo or Avilla beach, coming home to the smell of apples and cinnamon baking, the promise of tangy, baked apples and the sweet crunchy topping with ice cream made for a very appealing dessert.
I also like to add a 1/4 cup oats and 1/4 cup chopped nuts occasionally to the topping mixture for added goodness!
Back in the day when I was a kid on summer vacation we would head south, leaving the foggy City by the Bay, San Francisco.
San Luis Obispo was a sleepy town back then and I can remember “heading down to the creek” to venture and find frogs, play outside and even walk down to the McDonalds, whose sign claimed to have served 3 then 4 then 6 then 12 “million” people.
After a day at Avila or Pismo Beach we would pick up some salt water taffy and maybe take a trip over to Cal Poly to see the pigs in their pens; it was big stuff for us city kids!
We would always come back to my Grandma’s house, a two story, completely modern house designed by my architect uncle and pick fresh lemons from her amazing back yard, squeeze them in a hand crank juicer and make lemonade. Then we would pick fresh apples and she would make apple crisp for dessert…. ah great memories!
Lately I’ve been using Gala Apples and the results are just as good. Enjoy!

Thank you so much! I am so glad to be there!
I found this recipe very dry. Even the top selling of my apples got a bit burnt. I used honey crisp apples and granny smit. What did I do
I am sorry that was your experience with this tried and true one, that’s never happened to me before. It’s usually soft inside under the crunchy topping. Not quite sure what could have happened. I actually make this once a month easily and it’s always spot on.
Love recipes like this! Sounds like it would be delicious today after Sunday supper 😉 Extra ice cream for me please!
Yes with the ice cream addition. 🙂
Fantastic!
Thanks Anisa! 🙂

Thanks Marissa. Food does that. It’s wonderful! 🙂
Those sounds like nice memories. I’m sure the scent of an apple crisp must bring all that back to you. I love crisps, even more than pie!
I’m with you Jeff, plus they’re so much easier to make. 🙂
Hey Kevin! Apple crisp is a good ole comfort food! I have a question – how do you keep your neighbors from invading y’all’s house when you cook all these delicious things? I know if I lived near you I would be knocking on your door all the time!
I actually keep them at bay with bribed samples and taste tests!
