Super easy to put together with no experience required to make. You and these will be the hit of the party.

While I use chutney is this, any favorite jam of yours will do as well, though I might stick with apricot or peach. I actually painted one puff pastry sheet with four different jams and chutney to see which tasted better in a taste test. The apricot and peach had better appeal to me than the strawberry or grape did.

Major Grey’s Chutney is a favorite of mine and I love it smeared on flatbread like this Tandoori Chicken Flatbread and on pizzas. It’s perfect as a dipping sauce for numerous chicken appetizers and here in my Cheddar Bacon Puff Pastry Twists. Major Grey’s Chutney dates back to the 19th century and is presumably created by a British Army officer. The standard ingredients are mango, raisins, vinegar, lime juice, onion, tamarind and spices.

Crunchy and buttery puff pastry slathered with flavorful mango spiced Major Grey’s chutney and bacon twisted all around seem like an irresistible appetizer to me.

Puff pastry gets basted with Major Grey's Chutney or jam of choice and a slice of bacon is twisted together with the pastry strip. Baked to a golden brown and served as an appetizer.
Servings: 24 servings
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 40 minutes
Total: 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 package frozen puff pastry dough thawed, 2 sheets
  • 1 cup Major Grey’s Chutney or apricot preserves
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 2 lbs bacon about 24 slices

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375℉. Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with aluminum foil. Set baking racks in each pan and spray racks with cooking spray.
  • Roll out one puff pastry sheet to 8x12 inches. Brush with egg and spread ½ cup of chutney or preserves over dough up to edges. Sprinkle evenly with 1 cup of shredded cheese pressing lightly into dough to adhere. Starting at the short end of dough, fold over to enclose cheese mixture and press down lightly to seal. Cut short-wise into 12 ½-inch strips. Repeat process with remaining puff pastry and ingredients.
  • Lay out one slice of bacon and lay one strip of cheese dough, stretching carefully the length of bacon. Pinching both ends, twist in opposite directions several times to spiral bacon and dough. Place on baking rack. Repeat with all.
  • Bake 30 minutes or until pastry is browned and bacon crisp. Let cool five minutes and carefully remove twists from racks. Serve warm.

    1. I have not, it is just one of those recipes that needs to be made and served. I did have one or two leftover and snacked on them, but it’s just not the same Kate. My only thought would be to freeze after prepping/making and thaw then bake. I have not made it that way, but think it would work. Let me know if you do it that way.

    1. So glad you enjoyed these Rick. Appreciate you taking the time to come back and let me know, too. 🙂

  1. Kevin these twists look SO delicious. What an ingenious idea!! Happy Holidays to you and your family 🙂

    1. Thanks Brandon! Dave, the dogs and I will probably head up to Mt. Laguna for a little Christmas morning hike tradition of ours. Hit up the family for this past Thanksgiving. Hope you Jorge and TiVo have a great holiday.

Now I am SO hungry! These look incredible, Kevin. Love all of the flavors and you’ve been knocking me out with your photos lately.

    1. Awe, thanks so much Marissa. I think for every photo that gets on here there are 10 that didn’t make the cut. Fine tuning and working hard over here.
BTW, love those winter, snow photos you’ve shared. We were up in Portland (actually Beavercreek) for Thanksgiving and it rained, but no snow. I wish I had seen a glimpse of it. We usually take the boys hiking on Christmas up on Mt. Laguna and I’m hoping for some snow. It’s actually raining like mad here now as I type, so we might. Cheers!

  3. I’m loving these so much – they’re so elegant and beautiful, I’d never guess they were so easy to make! I know I’d gobble these up before I could share many 🙂

These twists make me want to do the twist! (I realize I’m dating myself, here!) But, it’s true! These are happy dance inducing!! Fabulous, Kevin!
